Well, our vacation in Sardinia is over and we made it home safe and sound and (most importantly) without any major breakdowns! I was dreading the trip home but tried to stay positive at the same time. It didn’t help that I was exhausted from a restless night’s sleep, and not to mention, dealing with an uncomfortable 7 months pregnant belly! I am going out on a limb here (and boasting loud and clear) that my son was a champ! 😉
Here’s our return itinerary:
Olbia (Sardinia)-Rome: 1 hour flight
Rome Fiumicino: 3 1/2 hour layover
Rome -Toronto: 9 1/2 hour flight
Toronto Pearson: 3 hour layover
Toronto-Windsor: 1 hour flight
Total transit time: 18 hours
In my blog post “Toddler + Transatlantic Flight = Help!” I wracked my brain (and my reader’s brains) on entertainment ideas for my son. Needless to say I was even more worried for the return flight seeing as my now 18 month old son has been more active and mobile than ever! To my surprise (and delight!), the simplest toys (if that’s what you can call some of them) had my son entertained during the entire trip!
Tic Tacs
Yep, that’s right…Tic Tacs! My son was amazed at the noise the package made and spent a good amount of time trying to figure out how to get the Tic-Tacs out (under my watchful eye of course!).
Reusable Sticker Book
This book was a lifesaver! My son had the time of his life peeling the stickers and sticking them to back of the tray table. There are a lot of doubles so I also stuck two of the same sticker together so my son could “play” with them without getting them stuck all over him. At one point I even had him sticking them all over ME-I think I got up to go to the bathroom once with an elephant stuck to my head!
Plastic Toy Cars
Nothing fancy here! Just your simple every day plastic toy cars that don’t make any sounds or light up. My son is going through a car phase right now so I’m assuming that’s probably the reason why these were so entertaining!
Air Canada In-Flight Magazine
What could be more interesting than flipping through the latest magazine, right?! I searched for pictures of food, which are another one of my son’s fetish’s right now! I “talked” him through most of the magazine while he pointed or turned the pages.
Plastic Fruit
I think I might have a little chef on my hands! Could it be that my son LOVES plastic fruit because he always sees “mama” cooking in the kitchen? (Or could it be because mama and him watch the Food Network on a daily basis?!)
And when all else fails…snacks!
Whether it be fruit, cookies, cereal..the most important thing is to have a variety with you! I also made it a point to give my son ONE cheerio at a time so as to prolong his attention-this really worked on the short legs of our trip!
