Nothing beats Italian pizza. Nothing!
I’m talking about that delicious, thin crust, wood-oven baked pizza. Not the kind where you have to dive into the take-out box to grab your favourite piece. Nope. I’m talking about your own personal pizza, ALL yours, ONLY yours!
We invited some friends over for a pizza dinner a few evenings ago. For them, it was your every day pizza affair…but for us, it was so much more!
We crave authentic Italian pizza ALL year (and end up stuffing our faces with it all summer so as to satisy our craving until the next summer comes along!). Don’t get me wrong, I love North American pizza, but only Italian pizza can convince me enough to “forget” that I am gluten and lactose intolerant (only to suffer the consequences the next day-sort of like the kind of hangover that makes you wish you hadn’t drank so much the night before!).
This particular pizza party was a milestone for my son…it was his first time ordering his OWN personal pizza!
Unlike North American pizza, in Italy you get to order your OWN pizza! (Yep, the pizza in that box is all yours!) Mind you, this thin crust pizza would equate to about 4-5 slices of american pizza (or maybe 2 if you prefer pan pizza from Pizza Hut!).
As you would in North America, you call to order, pick up (most places don’t deliver here), and voila…the pizza party begins!
Oh, and might I add that if you want to eat your pizza like a true Italian you must either eat it with a fork and knife (yes, piece by piece) or (my preference) cut “spicchi” (slices) then fold in half (so all of that delicious gooey cheese doesn’t fall out!).
The thing I love about Italian pizza is that the condiments are so varied…
Margherita
Marguerita with capers and anchovies
Marinara with thinly sliced eggplant
Prosciutto e Funghi
And my personal fave, Frutti di Mare in bianco (Seafood w/o sauce + mozzarella)
Can you believe my little man ate more than half of that pizza all by himself?!
And this is what was left of mine! 😉
What’s your favourite pizza condiment?
Now look what you did? I am hungry after reading this post. Pizza is my favourite ‘junk’ food, but I suppose in Italy it’s not really junk is it. My favourite toppings are ham, pineapple, mushrooms, pepperoni, Italian sausage….and I can go on and on. I won’t have ALL those on one pizza though. 🙂
You’re right…in Italy it’s not junk at all so no need to feel guilty! I love seafood, or mushrooms and prosciutto, or smoked salmon and mozzarella!
Ohh i wanna visit Sardinia so bad 🙂 This pizza looks amazing
Did you just decide you wanted to visit Sardinia so bad AFTER you saw these pics of pizza?! lol!
I LOVE learning about Italy through your summers in Sardinia. I just showed this to my husband – I hope that we can take a family trip to Italy someday!
Monica, you would LOVE Sardinia!!
