The holiday season is upon us, bringing celebrations, get-togethers, dinner parties, and of course a little indulgence for most people. It is a time when we tend to indulge in richer foods, eat and drink more than we normally would, and lose track of routine or healthy eating habits. As much as the festivities are meant to be enjoyed, they can often leave us feeling heavier, literally and figuratively, which can wreak havoc on our emotional state.

Mindful eating is a simple yet very powerful tool to help cultivate presence while you eat. It encompasses not only the body’s hunger cues, but also our attention and memory before, during, and after our eating experience. When we eat mindfully, we take the time to immerse ourselves in the full sensorial experience of eating. We give our bodies the time to experience the food, to feel satiated and satisfied.

Mindful eating encourages us to be present, savouring the food, noticing the colours, flavours, smells, and textures of the food. Paying more attention to what, when, and how we eat allows us to better tune in to the body’s true physiological hunger cues and make choices that truly resonate with our body.

The practice of Mindful eating is a simple concept but can be daunting for new and seasoned practitioners alike. It is important to start gradually and to always observe a beginner’s mindset. Ideally, you should start with implementing one or two practices then incorporate more as you familiarize yourself with Mindful eating.

Here are 6 Mindful eating tips for the holiday season:

1. Give yourself permission

Set the intention to enjoy the food you eat, whether it be a healthy or unhealthy option. As we all know, when you forbid foods, you often crave them even more. When you do eat those forbidden foods you end up feeling guilty which can lead to unhealthy food behaviours such as overeating and obsessive food thoughts.

Permission does not necessarily mean you have to eat everything that is offered, but it does give you back your personal power which in turn will result in less overindulging. The best way to put this into practice is to start with a small serving of the foods that you usually avoid. Eat calmly, enjoying every bite but don’t get a second serving. You will most likely feel very empowered.

2. Be present

Being fully present can be a challenge especially when you are eating in a room full of distractions such as engaging conversations around the table, listening to music or playing games. If only for the first few bites of your meal, try to sit down, turn off your phone, and avoid conversations or other distractions. Setting the intention to reduce distractions while eating gives you the opportunity to really tune into your body.

3. Observe physical and emotional hunger cues

Tuning into your body’s hunger signals makes it easier for you to choose foods that are healthy and nourishing. You may even notice that even if you choose unhealthy options, you will choose smaller portions or tend to overindulge less. Observe when your innate hunger begins to subside then refrain from eating more. You should full content and comfortable, instead of feeling bloated and excessively full.

4. Slow down When conversations are in full flow at the dining table, it can be very easy to become completely distracted while eating. With this in mind, try slowing down so you can fully appreciate the flavour of the food you are eating. After every bite put down your knife and fork and finish your mouthful. Engage in some conversation or make the intention to chew your food fully before taking another bite.

5. Eat with all 5 senses

Eating is a deeply rooted sensory experience but more than often not we eat so fast that we rarely engage all of our senses. Bringing awareness to each of our 5 senses during eating improves the entire experience. Before you take a bite, notice the subtleties of the food; the colour, size, and texture. Hold the food in your hand, bring it to your nose and smell the aroma, place the food in your mouth and wait to start chewing it. Once you have brought awareness to all your senses, you can slowly start to chew your food.

6. Observe self-compassion

The fact of the matter is you cannot eat mindfully 100% of the time, but you can make small changes to your routine and mealtimes that make you feel empowered and more present. One of the most challenging aspects of any new routine is the pressure that we impose on ourselves when we feel like we’ve fallen off track or ‘failed.’ Remember to observe a beginner’s mindset. If you don’t succeed, try again, and do so with self-compassion and kindness. Even the simplest intention or smallest success has the potential to kickstart a fresh mindset and healthier eating habits.

How Mindfulness Tames the Monkey Mind https://www.bitesforfoodies.com/blog/15051/ https://www.bitesforfoodies.com/blog/15051/#respond Mon, 07 Feb 2022 23:11:45 +0000 https://www.bitesforfoodies.com/?post_type=blog&p=15051 Learn to tame your Monkey Mind. The post How Mindfulness Tames the Monkey Mind appeared first on Bites for Foodies.

]]>
Consider this image in your mind; a monkey swinging from tree to tree, constantly moving and on the go, unable to concentrate on one thing at a time.

Like a monkey, our minds work in the same way, hence the expression “Monkey mind.” Zen Buddhists use this term to describe the mind chatter, the constant state of distraction, and feelings of being unsettled or restless.

Consider that we humans have thousands of separate thoughts each day. If you could imagine that each thought is like a branch, and the attention of your conscious mind is like a monkey, swinging from thought-branch to thought-branch.

All. Day. Long.

Perhaps, the image of the monkey jumping from tree to tree sounds like fun, but our minds are complex and for the most part our thoughts often reflect our fears, anxieties, regrets from the past, concerns for the future, and the pressures of every day life.

We live in a world of excessive stimuli. It is in our very nature to give our attention to numerous things at once. We are constantly on the go, rushing from one appointment to the next, and we so easily forget how important it is to slow down and pause. We constantly focus on what we did and what we are going to do, as opposed to what we are doing in the NOW. This is when the Monkey Mind can take over. It feeds on the mind chatter and instigates the stories that we create in our minds, leaving us feeling anxious, stressed, and overwhelmed.

We all have a Monkey Mind, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. We cannot simply fight the Monkey nor make it go away completely, but we can learn to observe it, understand it, tame it and live in harmony with it. What we need to do is create space and time to PAUSE.

Let’s try it! Take a deep inhale and exhale and say the word P-A-U-S-E out loud. Feel the vibration of the letter sounds in the back of your throat. (Calming, isn’t it?). There you go! You just settled your mind and practised 5 seconds of Mindfulness.

Just how we have the ability to jump from thought to thought, we also have the ability to slow down and focus. Mindfulness practises can inspire and encourage us to take mental breaks during the day. Finding the time to P-A-U-S-E is easy when you can do it on the spur of the moment, while you do any random act during the day. You do not need to meditate for hours, nor force yourself to sit still in an uncomfortable position for an excessive period of time. You’re not pushing away thoughts, you are actually embracing what comes up. It’s simple. You’re focusing your mind and using your senses to bring awareness to whatever it is that you are doing, seeing, feeling, listening to, and smelling in any given moment, whether that be watching the sunset, smelling hand soap, listening to birds chirping, chopping vegetables, etc.

The mind is like a muscle. It needs to be trained to slow down and ‘un-think.’ We can motivate that muscle by setting the intention to practise Mindfulness during our day. Perhaps, we begin with one Mindful moment then create space for more of these moments as we become more observant and conscious of the importance of pausing embracing the now. A Mindfulness moment can happen even only 30 seconds to a minute!

Sardinia is the land of my ancestors, and the place I call home for now. Although I live in the north, close to the famous coastline of the Costa Smeralda, I long to see the many facets of this beautiful island. Our day trip to northwest Sardinia opened our eyes to the stunning diversity of this land. There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing your own land through the eyes of a tourist, acknowledging the familiarity of nature, the buildings, and the ocean, yet experiencing new places that although seem typically Sardinian, are so different than ‘home.’

We recently visited the stretch of northwest coastline, running from the Li Junchi beach in Badesi to Castelsardo. A few hours of driving in complete silence is the perfect antidote to a busy and stressful week. Greenery, serenity, cork trees, cows…lots of cows!

Day Trip to North West Sardinia

Day Trip to North West Sardinia
We stopped for photo ops in some of the small towns along the drive. Something so simple as a white granite place of worship nestled off the beaten path brought me such serenity and inner silence – and inspired a yoga pose or two!

Day Trip to North West Sardinia

Day Trip to North West SardiniaKilometres and kilometres of windy roads lined with bright yellow flowers (weeds never looked so beautiful!) was the perfect contrast to the bright blue sky. So many bright colours – and a reminder that spring is on its way.

Day Trip to North West SardiniaWe arrived in Castelsardo, a traditional medieval town that dominates the Golfo dell’Asinara, shortly before (a late) lunch. We took a brisk walk through the picturesque medieval old part of town, with its narrow streets and charming squares as far as the Castello dei Doria, the only fully intact castle in Sardinia and from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view towards Asinara.

Day Trip to North West SardiniaAfter a mouth-watering seafood-inspired lunch, we headed to Badesi, stopping to admire the Roccia dell’Elefante (Elephant Rock), a large boulder of trachyte stone standing beside State Road 134, just outside Castelsardo. The origin of the rock is quite interesting: part of the rocky complex of Monte Casteddazzu broke off and rolled down the valley along the road. After years of erosion, the rock assumed the appearance of an elephant, with its trunk turned towards the road.

Day Trip to North West SardiniaOur next, and last stop was Badesi, a small town along the coastline that welcomes thousands and thousands of tourists during the summer. We arrived just as the sun was setting along the horizon shining down on the calm sea along Li Junchi Beach.

Day Trip to North West Sardinia
We saw all of this in only one day, yet it felt like we were there for much longer. Time seemed to stand still, which often happens when immersed in the stunning nature of this island. Coincidentally, our cultural day trip was finished off with the perfect view of some nuraghe – just one of the thousands of neolithic stone formations that line the inlands and coastline all over Sardinia.

Sardinia is known for its stunning beaches and touristy summer vibes, as well as its mild and short winters. This year mother nature had other plans for Sardinia, thanks to the icy Siberian winds that sent over freezing temps and snow last week, and record-breaking amounts of it!

Early last week Sardinia saw its first major snowfall in over 30 years. It was a winter wonderland in Northern Sardinia – or shall I say it was snowmaggedon! People scrambled to the supermarkets to stock up on food and water, schools closed for the day, and the general consensus was to stay indoors. To say this was the snowfall of the century is an understatement. For most Sardinians – many of whom have never seen snow, this was a major event. For a born and raised Canadian like myself, this snowfall was far from the Canadian winters I’m used to, but still quite a surprise considering the anomaly of this event.

Albeit I’m no stranger to snow, there was something peculiar about waking up and stepping outside to see snow – in Sardinia. I’ve never been a fan of neither the cold nor the snow, but to my surprise that early morning crisp, cold air made me nostalgic. It reminded me of home. The home I miss every single day. Mother Nature gave me a gift, a small but significant reminder of home, a day to reminisce about winters in Canada, and a chance for the kids to enjoy the snow they left behind.

The snow fell and within a day the snow melted. But the memories were made – snow in Sardinia, after 30 years, the exact year we decided to move here. Perhaps it was a coincidence, or perhaps it was Mother Nature’s way of sending us a little reminder of home.

The New Year always bring with it an innate desire for change, the perfect time to shed old habits and adopt new ones, such as the inevitable New Year’s detox diet, which seems to go hand in hand with New Year’s resolutions – although I’m more of a fan of New Year Affirmations as opposed to often unattainable resolutions!). It is so important for us to detox our bodies from toxins on a regular basis, and the holiday season is no exception. Toxins rob us of energy, deplete our immune systems, promote inflammation in the body, and can increase the risk of serious diseases.

If you’ve gone a little overboard this holiday season and you’re feeling the urge to eat clean, look no further than your local grocer’s produce aisle! Give your digestion a kick-start and rid your system of toxins with these Top 10 Detox Foods.

Lemons

By now most of us have probably heard that drinking warm water with lemon juice first thing in the morning works wonders for our bodies. Lemons help stimulate digestive function, cleanse the liver, and eliminate toxins from the body. In addition, the vitamin C found in lemons acts as a natural antioxidant and helps detox the body and burn fat. The beauty of lemons is that they’re incredibly versatile in recipes, which makes it easy to add them to just about any meal, from homemade salad dressings to smoothies, curries, baked goods, and more. Try this Salmon Quinoa Salad with Lemon Caper Vinaigrette.

Avocados

Top 10 Detox FoodsThis unique fruit is full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, anti-inflammatory properties, fiber and antioxidants and can help reduce inflammation in the body. The soluble fiber found in avocados is known to increase friendly gut bacteria in the intestine, which helps with our body functions. Try this recipe for homemade Guacamole

Dark Leafy Greens

Green veggies such as kale, Swiss chard, cabbage, and dandelion leaves are the essential building blocks of any healthy diet. They contain chlorophyll which rids the body of environmental toxins, heavy metals, herbicides, and pesticides, and not to mention makes your skin glow! There are so many ways to get leafy greens into your diet — eat them raw, add to soups, juices or smoothies, or sauté them with a touch of olive oil. Try these Kale & Black Beans Stewed in Tomato Sauce.

Ginger

The benefits of ginger are endless. This pungent root is packed with so many powerful compounds and boasts an array of medicinal properties. It helps cleanse the body by stimulating digestion and circulation, and helps rid the body of built-up waste and toxins in the colon, liver, and other organs. Add ginger to smoothies, eat it raw in salads, or add it to stir-fry recipes or rice bowls. Try this Ginger Turmeric Fried Rice Bowl.

Apples

An apple a day really could really keep the doctor away! Pectin in apples helps remove heavy metals and food additives from the body by stimulating bile production, which the liver uses to release toxins. Apples also contain many other detoxifying components like fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that provide nutrition and keep our systems working efficiently. Try this Apple Date Compote.

Fennel

This celery-like winter vegetable has a delicious anise-like flavour and is high in fiber, vitamin C and Potassium. It is a potent blood cleanser and helps purify and detox the liver. Adding fennel to your diet can help balance the pH level within your body, especially within your stomach, and can reduce reflux after meals. Fennel has a delicious anise-like flavour and be eaten raw in salads, sautéed until caramelized, or added to detox teas.

Turmeric

Turmeric has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine to treat a number of conditions. Curcumin, its main active ingredient has powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial effects. It is known to help fight chronic inflammation, stimulates blood flow and detoxifies the blood, relieves gas, works wonders for the skin, and its phytonutrients contribute to elevating mood – just to name a few. Add turmeric to stir fry recipes and rice bowls, vegetables, soups and stews, granola, and even smoothies. Try this Golden Milk Turmeric Smoothie.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit is high in vitamin C and the nutrients found in grapefruits increase the natural cleansing processes of the liver by boosting the production of liver detoxifying enzymes. They are packed with a variety of nutrients and vitamins, including potassium and lycopene and contain certain phytonutrients that are said to inhibit tumor formation. Add grapefruit to spritzers, roast, add to salad, or enjoy on its own with some mint and a drizzle of honey.

Beets

Beets have a wide range of health benefits because of their nutritional content, including vitamins, minerals, and organic compounds like carotenoids, dietary fiber, vitamin C, magnesium, and iron. They help reduce cholesterol and they help stimulate liver the functions of the liver and keep it healthy. Beets can be added as an ingredient in soups or salads, baked goods, and act as a natural food colouring.

Artichokes

Artichokes are low in saturated fat and cholesterol and a rich source of vitamins and minerals. They are also high in fiber which we knows helps stimulates healthy digestion. Winter has arrived, but not yet in Sardinia! The endless summer days in Sardinia are something I’ve been looking forward to since moving here 6 months ago. Mind you, the cooler season has definitely rolled in but only rears its head during the early morning hours and from the late afternoons and on. Just like anywhere in the world the temperature here varies. There are sporadic bouts of chilly weather and strong winds, then there are those sunny, warm days, reminiscent of summer. In fact, with temperatures sometimes reaching up to 70 degrees by midday, it often feels like the end of spring.

What better way to enjoy the beautiful weather than with an afternoon trip to the beach. If you didn’t know, summer in Sardinia is beautiful – but it is also hectic as hoards and hoards of tourists take over the quaint ocean-lined towns and the glorious beaches. As much as I love summer and the daily beach life, now that I am a local I’m learning to appreciate the calm and silence of the beach during off season. I often bring the kids to the beach on these warm days and truly enjoy the quiet time that we spend together in nature. I also love coming on my own, relishing in a silent yoga practice in complete solitude. The bright sun, the warm breeze, the sound of the ocean – it’s literally impossible to not be inspired by it all!

Pomegranates! My favourite fruit. Sweet, juicy, crunchy, and might I add chock full of antioxidants! How many of you avoid eating pomegranates simply because you haven’t found the perfect method to peel and deseed them? With this easy, proven method (proven by yours truly!) you can learn how to deseed pomegranates, quickly, efficiently (meaning not one little morsel lost) and mess-free!

To say I get my fix of pomegranates during the winter season is an understatement. I live off of them. I crave them. Every day. As per the norm I eat about 2-3 pomegranates a day – yes, a day! Bonafide addictive behaviour right there. Years ago when I first lived in Italy I literally ate the entire tree of pomegranates that was planted in our backyard. Every once in a while when I deseed a pomegranate I think back on the time I opened one to discover it was full of tiny spiders (cringe) which scurried out onto my hands, into the kitchen sink…pretty much everywhere (another cringe). And then there was the time I deseeded those FIVE pomegranates, threw them into a bowl, then devoured the entire bowl while watching a movie later that evening. That’s another story, but I can definitely say you can get too much of a good thing!

When I tell people about my addiction to pomegranates the first thing they ask is; “How do you have the patience to deseed them?!” Let’s be honest, after eating THAT many pomegranates, every year, for the last…I don’t even know how many years, one develops a preferred strategy, a method easy enough to get those little crunchy morsel outta there as quick and mess-free as possible.

How To Deseed Pomegranates

Let’s talk about how many ways there are to deseed a pomegranate; whack it with a wooden spoon, split it open in quarters then dig in, halve them and scoop out the seeds, and I’m sure there are many more. De-seeding a pomegranate can be a messy and difficult task if you do it the standard way but when you move the process under water, you’ll make your life that much easier! The water method – or as I call it, it’s the best way to deseed pomegranates. With this method the heavy seeds sink to the bottom of the bowl of water, the pith (the white tissue under the skin of the fruit) floats to the top, and you can rest-assured that your hands (and clothes) stay stain-free.

Before you begin, you’ll need a cutting board, a large bowl, and a colander. First, fill the bowl with water. Then, quarter the pomegranate, turning the pieces upside down on the cutting board when you cut them. Submerge one quarter at a time under the water pulling it apart seed side down. As you pull apart the skin gently nudge the seeds out. Pieces of skin and pith will float to the top and the seeds will sink. Inspect your handiwork before discarding the skin to release any leftover seeds. Scoop any floating pith out of the water with a slotted spoon or drain into the sink. Pour the pomegranate seeds into a colander to drain off the rest of the water.

How To Deseed Pomegranates

And voilà! A nice bowl of juicy, crunchy, sweet super healthy pomegranate seeds at your fingertips!

Mindfulness has increasingly become a way of life for many people. Long gone are the days when we hid our true feelings and emotions out of fear or shame. Sharing our experiences, heartaches and triumphs not only with others but with ourselves is the key to healing our souls and letting go of the past, of the things we cannot change.

For me, mindfulness is a daily activity, a daily reminder to appreciate the small things in life, the obstacles that help us grow and learn life lessons, and the beauty in all those precious moments that pass us by so quickly. Since moving to Italy and becoming a yoga teacher, my daily life is a constant reminder to practice what I preach. Yoga inspires me to be my best, to discover and accept my true self and this journey called life, and compels me to share my knowledge and thoughts with my students.

These Top 10 Mindfulness Quotes will inspire and encourage you to be present, to let go, to follow your intuition, and to live life to its fullest!

We have all heard about or personally felt the benefits of yoga for our physical, mental, and spiritual health. The sense of calm and feeling of strength post-yoga practice is undeniable. Yoga is a great activity for kids to try, whether it be done alone, in a group, or with the entire family. Without a doubt, practising yoga on a regular basis will help your kids feel great and keep their bodies and minds in motion.

11 Reasons Why Kids Should do Yoga

1. Yoga teaches kids about self-acceptance.

Our society sends us so many messages about inadequacy, false expectations, inappropriate body image, and more and kids are exposed to these messages every day through social media outlets. Yoga teaches kids to accept their bodies and their physical strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately gives them the tools to ward off those feelings of inadequacy, self- doubt, and low self-esteem that arise during adolescence.

2. Yoga helps kids develop their visual spatial skills.

Yoga works on strength, coordination, balance, motor skills, and so much more. It also increases core strength and helps children learn proper posture. As children learn how to guide themselves in and out of yoga poses, they are taught self-awareness and how to control their bodies by focusing on individual movements.

3. Yoga can be an individual sport.

In a world where team sports are held up on high on a pedestal, many kids feel unaccomplished and excluded if they don’t belong to a team. The beauty of yoga is that it can be practised in a group, and even better, independently. Children learn that there is no one better or worse at yoga than anyone else, and that physical abilities differ from person to person.

4. Yoga teaches kids calming techniques.

Most children are never taught how to express themselves appropriately, and so they deal with frustration by crying or throwing tantrums. Children are never too young to learn the breathing techniques that are used in yoga to calm the body and the mind. With time they will inevitably learn how to apply those calming tools in their everyday lives and react to any situation in an appropriate manner.

5. Yoga helps kids learn about patience.

By doing yoga kids learn about physical and mental restraint. They learn to practice in a group without rushing and respect everyone’s abilities and individual paces. Not only do they learn about being patient with others, they learn about being with themselves, taking their time to get in and out of poses, accepting their difficulties and getting past them.

6. Yoga supports positive mental health in children.

Mental health issues among children are on the rise. What better way to prevent them or reduce them than by teaching children how to focus on acceptance, love, positivity, optimism, resilience, etc. When children are exposed to yoga they learn about self-acceptance, which makes them more apt to see the good in others and to accept everyone for who they are, and they are also less likely to succumb to depression, anxiety, and other mental issues that are on the rise today.

7. Yoga teaches kids to take a mental break.

Kids need just as many mental breaks in their day as adults too, but they hardly ever get them. Their little brains are constantly in overdrive – expectations at school, homework, after-school activities, television, video games and technology, etc. Sometimes they just need time to BE, and most often this needs to be taught to them. Yoga encourages silent meditation as the body moves through poses, which helps children learn how to appreciate the stillness of the body and the mind.

8. Yoga allows kids to feel accomplished.

Yoga teaches kids to accept their bodies and how to improve flexibility, stamina, and strength. Yoga poses and flows are broken down step by step and not only are they fun, they are also challenging. In fact, the concept of failure is never introduced in yoga. This helps instil a sense of accomplishment that translates into other daily activities.

9. Yoga builds self-confidence.

Fear of failure is a learned behaviour that most kids aren’t born with. Children are more resilient and fearless than adults by nature, and have little to no inhibitions. Many challenging yoga poses encourage kids to overcome that small amount of fear that they might have and focuses on the idea that they are all equally strong and capable in their own personal way.

10. Yoga helps kids focus.

It seems that more and more these days kids are unable to focus on one given task for an extended length of time. Yoga helps teach kids to be present and to concentrate and focus on their body and breath. This allows them to tune into what’s happening on the inside, rather than the outside distractions around them. The ability to focus during yoga has a snowball effect and transfers to their everyday lives. Children are always told that they need to be engaged and productive. Their busy little minds are always in overdrive, so when they learn how to relax and be present they are better able to handle stressful situations.

11. Yoga is FUN!

Kids yoga is engaging, dynamic, and most of all fun! During yoga children learn that it’s actually acceptable to move freely, laugh out loud, be creative and silly. There is no competition, just fun and games. Everyone is encouraged to participate at their own pace, and children quickly learn that nothing they do needs to be perfect, and that everyone falls and everyone gets up. There is a ton of laughter and the environment is one of mutual love and respect.
