Honey Lime Macerated Strawberries

Honey Lime Macerated Strawberries

Strawberries are nature’s prelude to summer, and a tiny reminder that hot summer days are on their way! This recipe for honey lime macerated strawberries celebrates this tiny, heart-shaped fruit in its natural state, and although strawberries are the star of the show, the subtle flavours of sweet honey and tart lime elevate the flavour profile to a whole other level.

This refreshing dessert brings me back to our family dinner table in Sardinia, Italy. Oddly enough, it was my first time eating macerated strawberries. When these gorgeous strawberries were presented at the table little did I know that they were swimming in a delicious honey and lime-infused juice. And much to my surprise, they were also seasoned with a splash of cognac.

Wait, what?

Oh yes! (And for the record, cognac and strawberries are a match made in heaven!)

One might assume that after a bountiful dinner Italians would be more inclined to adorn their post-dinner table with sweets and baked goods, as opposed to fresh fruit. On the contrary, they equally enjoy cleansing their palates with fresh fruit as they do with sweet delicacies after a heavy meal.

Honey-Lime Macerated Strawberries

Let’s fast forward a few years.

Ever since my taste buds’ experience with those macerated strawberries, I find myself craving them as the warm weather approaches. And, I almost cannot contain my excitement when I see the baskets of local berries start lining the aisles of the supermarkets and taking over farmer’s market fruit stands. Although the majority of the strawberries that I purchase are predestined for maceration, I do also make a variety of easy, summer-inspired recipes that showcase fresh strawberries, such as strawberry cheesecake chia puddingstrawberry cheesecake chia pudding, and 3-ingredient strawberry sorbet.

Ingredients
2 cup organic strawberries, stems removed and chopped into quarters
  • 1 tbs. fresh lime juice
  • zest of 1 lime
  • 1-2 tbs. raw honey (or sweetener of choice)
Directions

Wash the strawberries, remove the stem and discard. Halve each strawberry then thinly slice. Transfer the strawberries to a medium-sized bowl, add the lime juice and honey, and stir to combine. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for at least 1-2 hours to allow the flavours to amalgamate…creating a delicious strawberry juice! Serve chilled, garnished with fresh mint, icing sugar, or better yet, a splash of cognac!

Sometimes I wonder if you should change the name to Family Bites. LOL. I would make this for myself – forget about the kids!

    • Actually, the original recipe is for adults (hence, the alcohol addition!). I’ve thought about the name change…I might just add a section for “family” meals!
