Hemp Heart Protein Balls

Hemp Heart Protein Balls

With only 6 ingredients, this wholesome recipe for vegan hemp heart protein balls is so easy to prepare. And to make it even better, there’s no baking required! The combination of crunchy hemp hearts, chewy oats, natural sweetener, vegan protein powder and earthy spices makes these raw snacks not only healthy, but also rich in flavour and satisfying.

Energy bites are an absolute lifesaver sometimes. When you’re on a plant-based diet, you’re often looking for ways to include extra protein in your diet. Hemp hearts are a great option to include in your diet since they’re so high in protein, with about 10g in 2 tablespoons. Hemp hearts have a delicious slightly nutty taste and a soft, crunchy texture. These tiny little superseeds are also rich in omega 3 oils and magnesium, which make them a nutritious addition to any diet. They can easily be incorporated into just about any snack or meal; sprinkle them on salads or rice bowls, mix into oats, granola, or yogurt, add them to baked goods, or make them the star ingredient, like in these hemp heart protein balls.

These nut-free treats make for the perfect snack for school lunches, and they’re great as a healthy pre-workout snack for myself – or anytime snack for that matter. This recipe proves that looks can be deceiving – these protein balls may be small, but they are so rich that even one or two go a long way. Word to wise, these won’t last very long. My suggestion is to double or triple the batch so you can store some in the freezer for a quick and easy on-the-go snack for you and the kids.

Ingredients
    1 cup gluten-free quick oats
  • 1/2 cup hemp hearts
  • 1/3 cup plant-based protein powder of choice
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup or raw honey
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla bean powder or 1 tsp. pure vanilla (optional)
  • 1/8 tsp. pink Himalayan sea salt (optional)
  • 1/3 cup dark chocolate chips (optional)
Directions

In a large bowl combine all of the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Add in the maple syrup and applesauce and stir to combine until the oats and hemp hearts are fully coated. If the mixture seems a bit dry and doesn’t come together easily, add more maple syrup (about 1 tsp. at a time) until the consistency is wet enough to stick together easily.

Lightly coat your hands with cold water then scoop about 1 tablespoon of the mixture into your hands. Roll the mixture into a ball in the palm of your hands, set aside, and repeat with the remaining mixture. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
