Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies

Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies

An interesting twist on traditional chocolate chip cookies, these healthy vegan avocado chocolate chip cookies are made with creamy avocado, decadent chocolate chips, and natural, healthy ingredients.

With its mild, slightly sweet flavour, avocado is an ideal green to add to baked goods. It literally goes undetected in these cookies, unless you roughly mash them as I do-I find the little green specks somewhat pretty! Besides the creamy texture the avocado gives to these cookies, it’s undoubtably healthy; packed with heart-healthy fats, protein, potassium, and dietary fiber.

Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies

We love avocados in this household, but more often than not that leftover, ripened halve sitting the fridge gets thrown out! With this recipe now under my belt, there are no more excuses for wasting leftover avocado…looks like I’ll be making these cookies often!

Cookies don’t necessarily have to equate to unhealthy. I make cookies all the time for the kids, but little do they know that I usually substitute traditional ingredients with healthier, vegan options, such as avocado for saturated fat and flax seed for eggs. What they do know is that they are always scrumptious, just as any cookie should be!

Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies

These particular cookies have a spongey, cake-like texture, puffing up in the oven just like little meringues; light and airy with a delicate crunch on the outside. They’re definitely worth a try!

With its mild, slightly sweet flavour, avocado is an ideal green to add to baked goods. It literally goes undetected in these cookies, unless you roughly mash them as […]

Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies
    1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • ½ cup ripe avocado, mashed
  • 2 tbs. extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup organic maple syrup
  • 1 flax egg (or 1 medium organic egg)
  • 1 tsp. chia seeds (optional)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup melted + 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup dark cocoa powder

Halve the avocado and remove the pit from one half. Heat the chocolate chips and the coconut oil in a microwave for 25-30 seconds or until just about melted. In a small bowl, soak 1 tbs. ground flax seed with 3 tbs. warm water for 10 minutes until thickened.

Add the wet ingredients to a large bowl, mashing the avocado directly in the bowl, and stir until combined.  Add the dry ingredients, including the 1/4 cup of raw chocolate chips, and stir until smotth and combined.

Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Dollop about 1 tbs. of the cookie batter onto the cooking sheet, at least 1-2 inches apart.

Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies

Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out just about clean. Remove immediately from the oven and set aside to cool.

Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies

Store in an air-tight plastic bag or container in the fridge for up to one week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Even more reason for me to buy avocados as I never have leftovers. YUM! I’ve made pudding and ice cream, but not cookies. Need to fix that.

That’s a great alternative to the traditional tasty but terrible for you cookie. 😉 I love getting nutrients in the kids. If it comes in cookie format, they might even cheer. 🙂

  • what a great idea!! I always feel bad giving my soon bites of real cookies, but this looks perfect!!

    • I love how coin the term ‘real!’ lol! I do to, no big deal! Mine just don’t get them that often so they have nothing to compare my ‘healthy’ cookies to! Doesn’t seem to bother them at all 😉

  • This is interesting. I have not tried avocados on cookies ever and this sounds pretty adventurous to me – it will definitely be worth a try. I kinda like it already because it looks chewy 🙂

cookies look delicious, not to mention healthy!

  • Chocolate chip cookies have always been my long-time favorite of mine, but I have never tried them with avocado as an ingredient. My curiosity is piqued, therefore I’ll definitely have to give this recipe a try.

    • If you’re used to traditional chocolate chip cookies, these might take getting used to. They’re not as rich but still delicious and they have a soft, spongey texture, as opposed to crunchy, buttery cookies.

I never even thought this was possible, what a healthy alternative worth trying!
