I’ve been investigating what the cause could be. It happens that for about four or five days now I’ve been eating a clove of black garlic in the morning and in the evening. So now I’m wondering if that’s what the problem has been. I’m going to stop eating the black garlic to see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the article.

I have similar symptoms but I have learned that I can make garlic-infused olive oil and use it in foods (in place of garlic). I get much of the flavor without feeling so sick.

Damn this is exactly my experience. Any fresh or dehydrated garlic and it’s absolute misery starting within an hour of consuming it and lasting for 1-4 hours.

Small amounts of powdered garlic seem to be ok, but I still avoid it when I’m able to.

I’ve never met anyone who’s even heard of it. I’m Italian on both sides of my family as well :/

I only frequent the restaurants that we know “are safe” for us, otherwise, I prepare food at home. It has been a nuisance at times when visiting family & friends and it certainly takes away the idea of spontaneity or trying a new restaurant for the fun of it as that has already been a wicked failure!
I look forward to relief in the future as I am an optimist & hope that enzymes will help. Thank you.

Hi, I cannot eat garlic AT All and cook daily. We use shallots to substitute for fresh garlic and it provides a very similar flavor!

Wow, never knew this was a thing until now. I usually always eat foods with garlic powder or garlic salt and it doesn’t bother me. Last night m lady tried something new with this garlic parmesan sauce. A couple hours after eating i felt sluggish and kind of sick but I didn’t think much of it until i went to sleep and woke up with the urge to throw up and use the bathroom at the same time. The stench from the throw up was so strong. The food was good and I had eaten about two plates. Discomfort in my stomach still remains, I can hear it aching every chance it gets.

I had no problems with them until about mid 2020. I get heartburn, feel nauseated, and get a headache. I just feel off the next day. The most horrible side effect is the taste of garlic or onions. It lasts for days and nothing I do can get rid of it. I try to avoid it like the plague. It’s not easy when eating out. It’s in everything. I have this issue with the powder, too. And even just the tiniest bit of either causes these problems.

Every now and then I will still eat pizza, but I always regret it, like I am today. I’ve started saying I’m allergic when I go out, because the unpleasantness is so severe, I just can’t take it.

Thanks for this article!

Nausea, painful bloating, gas, cramps, diarrhea within an hour of eating it. I can tolerate a tiny amount of powdered garlic if I have control over quantity otherwise I won’t eat it. It’s a very difficult ingredient to avoid.

(I had asked her to wake me at 6pm but was like drugged). This is something totally uncommon for me because I usually never nap except on one day, on Easter when the traditional meal in Greece is lamb with “tzatziki” (Greek yogurt with cucumber and garlic). Lately I’ve been buying a certain ready to eat meat from the super market and have been dropping dead after my meal. I can’t wake up and when I do my head is heavy, I have a metallic taste in my mouth and usually I haven’t digested my meal. I can taste the garlic in it, so this is definitely the culprit! Does anyone else have thalassemia stigma? I wonder if there is a connection or if it is just intolerance.
