For the last two weeks there’s been a potty party going on in my house (thankfully NOT into the wee hours!).  We’ve been having a good laugh (at the expense of our carpet/my son’s pants/my daughter’s Bumbo chair, etc), getting out of control, running around the house doing the pee-pee dance, clapping and cheering out of sheer excitement (more so mine and my husband’s) of making it to the potty in time, etc.

My son turned two years old about three weeks ago.  As for milestones (besides talking our ears off and singing “The Wheels On The Bus” about 20 times a day) he’s been really into brushing his teeth…

…and of course, the potty!

We initially put the potty in the bathroom (as more of an art piece, you can say!) when my son was about 20 months.  The intent was not to start potty training right away but to get my son used to seeing it there.  At first he only used it to store his legos…

then as a step stool to grab stuff off the counter, then one day he decided he was going to “pee” in it.  He was actually very fascinated with it for a about a month…then out of the blue the novelty wore off and the potty was left unused and forgotten. Friends and strangers had offered their advice on how to do potty training.  We had decided early on that we were going with the “go commando” option.  We were in no rush to start potty training until…

Two Saturday’s ago when I came home from the gym my husband nonchalantly told me that my son had asked to go pee in the potty…not HIS potty, but OUR potty!  And that was that!

It was the end of his potty (and good riddance…I think those things are useless) and the beginning of our potty-training adventure!

Although my son personally decided when to jump on the potty-bandwagon he obviously still needs Mom and Dad’s help.  Yes, he’s had a few accidents but I know that it comes with the territory.  However, we weren’t prepared for some of the “accidents” he had the other day….

Like pooping in his play room then running to Dad to let him know there was poop in there (as if it had magically appeared!)

He was so proud of that he was able to “show me” exactly where these “accidents” took place (by pointing matter-of-factly to both of the temporary potties!)

I think all the potty-talk got him inspired…(Looks like someone needs to study more!)

Needless to say, as first-timers I can say that our potty experience wasn’t as bad as we had anticipated!
