Healthy Apple Nachos

Healthy Apple Nachos

If the fact that these healthy apple nachos are paleo, dairy, and, gluten free doesn’t sell you then maybe their simple 5-minute preparation and absolutely delicious flavour will! Five simple ingredients and five minutes is all you need to prepare this nutritious, decadent snack.

Moms, I know your time is precious and for this reason I challenge you to attempt this recipe. It can’t be any harder than walking over to the pantry, rummaging through the shelves in search of a healthy snack, settling the kids at the table, unwrapping said snack, and pouring a glass of milk. Ok, it might take a few more minutes than that (like 2 minutes!), but the end product is unequivocally better than any packaged food item you might have lingering in the pantry.

Healthy Apple Nachos

This recipe was definitely an impromptu one. My mind was food fantasizing (as it often does) while slicing some apples for afternoon snack. And so, healthy apple nachos were born. And they were so well-received that I confidently confirm that these babies are here to stay!

We couldn’t get enough of these! We love the combination of these particular flavours however, you can add any toppings you’d like, such as;

  • sliced or slivered walnuts, almonds, or cashews
  • peanut butter or nut butter of choice
  • salted or raw pumpkin or sunflower seeds
  • melted white chocolate
  • caramel sauce
  • date paste (fresh dates blended with water and lemon zest)
  • fresh berries, such as raspberries or strawberries
  • lemon or orange zest
  • crumbled cookies or chocolate bars

Healthy Apple Nachos

These healthy apple nachos are an explosion of flavours and textures in every bite-creamy nuts, crunchy chia seeds, sweet coconut flakes, decadent chocolate sauce all smothered over fresh, tart apples. And they’re healthy too, especially if you choose to prepare homemade chocolate sauce. Just blend coconut oil, cocoa powder, and sweetener in a small food processor, and voila! (And there’s the extra minute or two I previously referred to!)

Ingredients
    2 large green apples
  • 2 tbs. extra virgin coconut oil + 1 tbs. dark cocoa powder + 2 tbs. raw honey (or 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips, melted)
  • 3-4 tbs. crushed pecans or nut of choice, roughly chopped
  • 1 tbs. chia seeds (optional)
  • 2 tbs. unsweetened coconut flakes (optional)
Directions

Heat the coconut oil, honey, and cocoa powder in a small bowl for 25-30 seconds or until melted. Stir until smooth and combined. Cut the apple in half with a large knife (peel if desired) then cut into quarters. To remove the core, stand each quarter piece up onto the cutting board and run the knife down the apple slice, about 1/2 – 3/4 inch from the core. Once the core is removed, discard then slice each quarter piece as finely or as thick as desired.

Arrange the apple slices on a large plate. Drizzle over the chocolate sauce and garnish with coconut flakes, chia seeds, and pecans, or ingredients of choice. Serve immediately while the chocolate sauce is still warm or set aside for 5-10 minutes until the chocolate sauce hardens. Whichever serving option you choose, they’re both equally delicious!

  • What a great idea!! So much easier to make and to eat than caramel apples ( my fave!!)…noticed someone mentioned Nutella as a topping! Yes!!

  • I love apple nachos! What a nice way to keep it healthier by using dark chocolate (we usually use nutella)

  • These look like they would make a fun healthy (semi-healthy) snack for the kids on the weekends.

Healthy indeed! We love nachos but the chips and cheese kind of nachos. But this is something that I have no doubt we will love too since it has chocolate chips and pecans in it. 🙂

The recipe looks easy to follow however finding the‌ ingredients and preparing for them is quite the challenge here. Maybe it’s time to revisit local markets which are farther from home to discover new things. 🙂

I never in a million years thought to make something like this. Great idea! Although I’m not a fan of dark chocolate – I bet it tastes good mixed with the apple!

    • I’m not much of a fan either however, you can sweeten the sauce as uch as you need to buy adding extra agave or whichever liquid sweetener you use!

  • I love this take on “nachos” :). So creative. And with all those toppings, I bet any kid (or adult, for that matter), would find themselves digging in. I know my toddler would love to help make this dish. Although we’d have to leave off the coconut…my husband isn’t a fan ;).

yum. these look good. I prefer green apples over red. I might add some snickers on top though 🙂

    • Me too! Actually, I don’t like red apples that much at all. I find that they also lack that crunch that green apples have. Snickers do sound good too 😉
