6 Creative Ways to Garnish Apples

Sometimes, the simplest snacks are the ones that get rave reviews. One of my kid’s favourite snacks is fresh fruit, especially apples. Their sweet, subtle flavour lends well to so many flavour additions, like hemp hearts, nut butter, and chocolate. Love apples? Get inspired with these 6 creative ways to garnish apples.

My kids always come home from school absolutely ravenous. The minute they walk into the doorway, they kick off their shoes, drop their bags, and head right to the kitchen. Most days I don’t get home from work until shortly after they do, so needless to say after-school snacks are usually an after thought – translated, I grab a yogurt from the fridge or something from the pantry (always healthy options, of course!). The other day however, I was perusing some recipes from the Blog and came across these decadent apple nachos  and easy apple sandwiches, and I was inspired to create this fun snack for the kids. These apple slices couldn’t be any simpler to make and literally took minutes to prepare. Not only are they healthy, they pack a punch of protein and are totally kid-friendly. The kids loved getting in the kitchen with me to prepare these and even better, they got to choose their own toppings. I simply set out a smorgasbord of garnishes; nut butters, coconut flakes, raisins, Goji berries, chocolate and carob chips, hemp hearts, Nutella, etc, for everyone to choose from. Check out these delicious flavour combinations;

These sandwiches are portable and don’t require refrigeration, which makes them ideal for school lunches, or for those afternoons when we have errands or appointments right after school. Having said that, if these aren’t being serving immediately, they will brown like any apples does. To avoid this, simply combine about 1/4 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of lemon in a bowl and brush the tops of the apples before adding the garnishes.

    What a fun idea .. especially for kids! At our house I’m an apple and peanut butter girl, but I know if I’m going to entice my grandson to eat, the more I can pretty it up the better. Thank-you for all of ideas for fun flavor combos x

  • Yummy! I love that they’re great to carry during travels and also as snacks in school or in the office at work. Everything looked delicious and I’m not sure which one is my favorite.

  • These are such great ideas for healthy snacks. I have done apples with peanut butter and granola before and they are filling and nutritious. I would have never thought to add some jam as well. Can’t wait to try that tomorrow!

  • Oh, our boys will so love this, and they aren’t little anymore! Thank you for the tip on this creative and nutritious snack. I won’t mind cleaning the kitchen a bit after they make their garnished apples!

  • What a great idea, I think I am going to make this apples for our next party. I know they are going to be a hit not only with kids but also with the adults. I would have never thought about all the choices to top the apples, Before this post it was peanut butter at that was it, but now I can add more things and make them fancier. • What a great idea. I have used apple slices for tuna “sandwiches” as well as some apple and peanut butter slices. So fun! I will have to try these ideas too. My kids would love it.

    We usually eat apples which gets quite boring. I think I’d enjoy the Almond butter and strawberry jam on my apples most of the six garnishes mentioned. My hubby would probably enjoy any of them except for the coconut one. My little guy will enjoy the one with peanut butter.

  • I am honestly impressed! I never even thought of doing something like this but I sure will now! The Sunbutter, coconut flakes, and sesame seeds really caught my eye! Thank you for this creative idea! We do love our apples but it is nice to have different ways to eat them!
