San Pantaleo is a quaint, picturesque village perched in the hills of the Gallura region of Sardinia that embodies the peacefulness and tranquility of this majestic island.

This charming, timeless town is a treasure hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy towns of the Costa Smeralda.

Its narrow streets are lined with stone-built homes, artisan shops, trendy cafes and restaurants, and colourful flora.

Every Thursday morning the winding streets of the town square transform into a busy market, boasting treasures created by local artists, such as ceramics and paintings, fruits and vegetables, as well as local delicacies, such as honey, cheese, and meats.

Surprisingly, after spending every single summer in Sardinia for the last 12 years, this was the first time I visited the market in San Pantaleo.

What makes it stand out from other traditional markets is the variety of artistic pieces showcased by local artisans.

While the majority of small town markets offer mainly food and other basics such as tablecloths, clothing, and commercialized jewelry, this market is also full of authentic and unique clothing and art pieces.

With the kids in tow, my mother-in-law and I did a quick walk-through (because, um, we had the kids in tow!) just so I could get a feel for the authenticity of the market and drool over the local treasures and delicacies.

Next Thursday, the kids will surely be staying home so I can take my time strolling through the streets, stopping to admire every intriguing kiosk along the way!

I’ve never been to Sardinia! Looks stunning. There’s something beautiful about mingling with locals at the market in a new place when you are traveling.

  • How fun, I would love to checkout the market in San Pantaleo. Of course sans kids, mine would have been wanting to get ahold of everything. It looks like a quaint area to explore.

What a gorgeous and charming looking place, I immediately knew it was somewhere in Italy – I know you’re in Sardinia but still… I love markets like that, I visited one myself when I was in Florence and there was such an array of things for sale. I love that you included a scooter picture too, I saw them everywhere when I was in Italy and have never seen one here in Ireland 🙂

  • I love that beautiful architecture. And the scenery too. The market looks like a place where you’d find some really great things. I definitely have to visit here someday.

  • Sardinia is on my bucket list of places to visit. I love open air markets so this is right up my alley. Your children look so happy and I am sure they will remember these special moments just as you do from your many summers.

    • Is it?! You’d love it here! I’m lucky to call this place my second home!

This will be my second visit to Sardinia in two years!!
I’m so excited to return ‼️‼️

        • Hi Linda! I’m not actually sure…if I remember correctly late September. If it is closed you can still visit the town, of course!

Sardinia looks fantastic. Local markets are the best way to get to know a town. The one in Granada, Nicaragua is my favorite in the world. This one looks like it has some real cool stuff.

  • Local markets are always at the top of my sightseeing list when I travel, and this one looks great! I was in Sardinia in January, but sadly didn’t see any markets. I’ll try to remember this for our next trip to the island, your photos are lovely 🙂
