Glucose Screening Test Tauma!

Glucose Screening Test Tauma!

Saturday morning…the day I’d been dreading for 28 weeks…the glucose screening test!! The reason is obvious, hence the title of this post!

Any woman who is pregnant or has children knows what I’m referring to…way too many hours of fasting (especially for someone who is hypoglycemic!), an hour wait in a boring medical lab waiting room, and of course, a bottle of pure sugar…to drink in under 5 minutes!

I knew little about the procedure the first time around.  It wasn’t so much the “tastes like thawed orange freezie” glucose drink I downed in under ONE minute, because, to be honest, I didn’t find it that disgusting!  It was the mistake of downing the liquid sugar after having fasted for 12 hours!

Here’s the drink in question…

Here’s what happened, in a nutshell…

I downed the drink in under 5, started to feel light-headed after about 10 minutes, couldn’t get up to call the nurses, asked the man sitting across from me to call them, (he didn’t speak English very well), he got the picture after I told him THREE times, the nurses helped me to the back room as I momentarily blacked out, I spent 2 hours laying down in the back room and ended up having sugar withdrawal all day long!

This time I took the proper precautions…I brought my husband/photographer/possible nurse-fetcher along with me…just to be safe! The plan was to arrive as early as possible so as to avoid dealing with the extreme hunger pangs for too long! We were in at 8.30am and out in time for me to get to my yoga class!

“Here we go again…” (Can you not see the trepidation in my eyes?!)

Yay! The deed is done…time to pray!
On a side note, I was getting VERY strange looks at this point…especially from the nurses! They had already yelled at me for leaving the room (to take a picture-all in the name of my blog!) because they thought I was sneaking some to my husband (like he would willingly drink that stuff!).

I don’t know if taking my time to empty the bottle worked or if God was on my side today, but I pulled through (with only a few dizzy spells and nausea!).

“Need…food!!!” I brought along one of my “healthy coconut carob puffed rice bars” for my late brekkie.

This last pic is a definite exaggeration of my relief and excitement of having “pulled through” the screening test..without slurring talking to a stranger, getting dragged by nurses and being confined to a small, cold medical lab room curled up in the fetal position for 2 hours!!

What was your experience with the glucose screening test? I’d love to read some of your stories!
